A central question behind the Lagos Patterns project is - how can the visual culture of one of the world's fastest-growing megacities be translated into pattern designs that reflect the energy it exudes? Lagos Patterns is about observing and paying attention to the colours, sounds, shapes, and lines that give a city its identity. For the design above, I listened to some of Emeka Ogboh's Lagos Soundscapes and created motifs inspired by the soundscapes and the visual language common to stickers found in Lagos.
The designs created for Lagos Patterns offer an alternative to those designed and produced in Holland and marketed to Africans as 'African' patterns. It's a way of storytelling and owning the narrative in an important aspect of everyday life in the state.
Lagos Patterns is an ongoing project.
